Today each student is able to choose between a composition (creative writing) assignment and a zoology (study of animals) assignment. Here is the subject matter (a picture) for either assignment/lesson:
Zoology Assignment: using the internet or other sources (yes, contacting a zoologist is permissible), identify the exact species of rodent. Provide it's common name as well as its scientific name. Finally, give it your own name (i.e. "George", "Mighty Mouse", etc.). Post answers on this site.
Composition Assignment: Use the following opening sentence to create a story about this mouse (post your story on this site):
The night stillness was punctured by Laurel's scream. She was, in fact, screaming like the girl she is. Gathering her wits about her like a librarian who frantically tries to pick up a spilled armful of books scattered across the floor, she composed herself and began to consider her options.

Laurel’s Rat Hurbert
The night stillness was punctured by Laurel's scream. She was, in fact, screaming like the girl she is. Gathering her wits about her like a librarian who frantically tries to pick up a spilled armful of books scattered across the floor, she composed herself and began to consider her options. Laurel could either run like a five year old or be a man and pick it up and put it outside. Laurel picked up the rat and was swinging back the rat to throw it outside. Laurel was screaming while swinging it. She wanted to throw it as far as she could (which isn’t that far) the tail went straight in her mouth. She ran home to her kids and Lincoln loves animals so he wanted to keep it. Laurel could not say no to Lincoln. Laurel one night snuck in his room and took it. She learned to love the rat. Laurel slept with the rat and it was licking off her lotion. She took it everywhere she went. She got kicked out of many stores because of her rat. Hurbert her rat was her best friend! Laurel always tucked in Hurbert in instead of her kids. She started liking the rat better that her own kids and husband. Her kids and husband were making a plan to get rid of the rat. Laurel went to bed one night and woke up and went to check on Hurbert. He was dead! She started crying. Laurel suddenly woke up! It was all a dream!! Her pet dog was in his cage by her bed all tucked in. She was relieved. She hates rats and small rodents. Her husband told her all the things she was doing. She was eating gummy worms, going into Lincoln’s room and stole a pillow; she kept tucking in her dog, screaming and crying. She was laughing and crying at the same time. She is never going to tell anyone about that dream ever.

ReplyDeleteThe night stillness was punctured by Laurel's scream. She was, in fact, screaming like the girl she is. Gathering her wits about her like a librarian who frantically tries to pick up a spilled armful of books scattered across the floor, she composed herself and began to consider her options. Seeing as she had no better ideas, she proceeded to scream hysterically whilst scrambling onto the kitchen counter to increase the distance between her and the small rodent. Unfortunately, this woke up the entire family who was tired and trying to sleep excluding Thomas, who was out on a jog, and Logan, who was idly listening to music only to be interrupted by her mother's shrill screeching. Everyone rushed to the kitchen in a confused daze wondering if perhaps Laurel was being murdered. Based on the screaming the idea didn't seem too far fetched.
ReplyDelete"What is it?" Griffin asked looking around for a masked murderer with a kitchen knife but seeing none.
"It's a mouse! It's a mouse! Get rid of it! Get rid of it!" Laurel shrieked sounding near to tears.
Looking under the couch Logan confirmed that it was indeed a small brown field mouse. It was rather cute actually but of course it did not belong in the house and had to be gotten rid of. Unfortunately the lazy teenager had no interest in doing the job and left the room to go back to listening to music, this time on the dining room table, and left the furry creature, the two babbling excited boys, and her panicking mother to their own devices, not without grabbing a soda first of course.
Both Lincoln and Griffin seemed fascinated by the petite mouse, though Lincoln a tad more hesitant than his older brother. Griffin took up the task of keeping an eye on the mouse, Lincoln close at his side assisting him. Roxy was confusedly wandering around wondering what the heck was going on. Laurel was crying for her husband still firmly seated on the kitchen counter despite the rodent being in the other room. And Logan and Emily, who was visiting the Wickes to see a Twenty One Pilots concert with Logan, were listening to music on dining room table with bored expressions.
This was the chaos that Thomas found when he tiredly jogged into his house after an exerting run. After having the situation explained to him, he quickly set about capturing the mouse in a box and, much to the disappointment of Lincoln who wanted to keep the field mouse as a pet, freed it outside. Laurel gratefully got down from her perch and gave a relieved sigh and then made her entire family promise not to leave doors open so that it would never happen again. Thomas only gave a long suffering sigh and went to bed.
